Having experienced a mild winter here in the Midwest for the past two years, caused many people to temporarily forget what winter is like here in the windy city. The weather so far has been amazing. This year, the frigid temperatures, work stoppage and school closings seem to be the norm.
Are you looking for some fun things to do with the kids ?
What are some of the things you do with your children when they are out of school, because of fourteen inches of snow , and a minus twenty below zero freezing temperatures?
Before the days of air polution and foreign substances in the air, as children, we looked forward to snow days and closed schools. Our families would treat us to snow ice cream, and we would eat icicles that hung from the roof of the house. They actually made us different flavors of ice cream from the snow, and their secret ingredients. It was simply delicious!
To us, that was fun and exciting. It was a sad day in the eyes of a lot of kids when the newscasters informed us that eating the icicles and the snow were unsafe. Because of the harmful substances in the air, eating the ice was strickly prohibited. At that point we had to create other fun things to do.
If you are looking for some fun thing to do with your kids, here are some ideas to stir your thinking.
Build a snowman.
Make some old fashioned popcorn, and make popcorn balls.
Roast peanuts.
Bake cookies.
Share family stories and heirlooms.
Build a sled, or use a rubber mat, and take the smaller children for a exciting ride in the snow.
Store warm blankets and extra clothing in your car in case of an emergency.
Stock emergency items in your pantry in case of power outages . You could include such things as: a hand operated can openers, flash lights w/batteries, battery operated candles, jelly, peanut butter, crackers, tuna, spam, bottled water, juice, fruit, bread etc.
Whatever you do to amuse yourself this winter, drink plenty of warm liquids, dress appropriately and be safe.
P.S. If you have other fun ideas or safety tips you wish to add to this list , you may share in the comment section below.
Warm Regards,
