The month of March is a time to recognize some of our Women of Distinction and some of their accomplishments that changed the lives of people everywhere.
In this article, I will share some hightlights from the life of Rosa Parks.
Rosa Parks 1913-2005 was an African American woman who transformed the lives of many individuals, when she failed to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955.
During that time, due to racial segregation, seating on the bus was seperate. Rosa had worked all day and her feet were tired. She sat on the front of the bus and refused to move to the back of the bus when asked. As a result of her action, she was arrested.
Rosa continued her fight against racial inequalities. Her action inspired a movement known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. Dr. Martin Luther King and so many others joined her fight and refused to ride the bus as well. They formed groups, walked to work and anywhere else they wanted to go. The crowds grew larger and larger. This went on for about three hundred eighty-one days, before racial segregation on city buses was ended in 1956.
Rosa Parks stated, ” The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”
On February 27,2013 a statue in her honor was unveiled by President Obama during a cermony at the United States Capital in Washington D.C.
