Upcoming changes to the $20.00 bill was the trending topic in the news recently. Harriet Tubman an African American woman and a former slave was scheduled to replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20.00 bill in the year 2020. She is the first African American to receive such an honor.
Harriet Tubman is widely recognized for her role in forming the Underground Railroad, an escape route she used to free the slaves. She escaped from slavery during the 1800’s, and returned many times to help others escape and find freedom in the North.
Despite the fact that harm would have come to her if she had been caught, she persevered. She risked her life to save others. She had the courage and the determination to return for her family that she left behind. She led them and so many others to freedom and a new way of life.
Because of her humanitarian efforts during the 1800’s, her bravery and hard work, she is being honored by becoming the new face on our nation’s currency.
