The month of February has been designated as a special time to pay tribute to great leaders whose contributions have become a part of American History.
Since 1926, February has been observed as African American History Month. It is also commonly called Black History Month. The first celebration of Black History was introduced by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. It lasted for one week and was expanded to one month in 1976.
Throughout the month of February each year, commemorative events are held to honor the achievements of African American leaders and their contributions to the world. During the Black History observance, you can expect to find events and activities such as school assemblies, church services, pot luck dinners and museum tours. You will also find artwork and artifacts on display, men and women wearing well designed african garb, performances and events at libraries, neighborhood theaters and community organizations.
Below is a list of some of the notable achievers who have been honored for their work, and other contributions to society.
1869 Howard University in Washington D.C. was the 1st Black Law School
1940 Booker T. Washington was the 1st African American recognized on a postage stamp
1947 Jackie Robinson was the 1st African American signed to Major League Baseball
1963 Sidney Poitier was the 1st African American to win an Academy Award
1967 Thurgood Marshall was the 1st African American Supreme Court Justice
1983 Harold Washington was the 1st African American Mayor of Chicago, Illinois
2009 Barack Obama 1st African American President of the United States of America
2012 Ebony and Jet magazine’s founder, John H. Johnson ‘s commemorative stamp was released.
It was Booker T Washinghton who said that, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles one has overcome while trying to succeed”.
