Is Your Child High School Ready ?

We are approaching the time of the year when students are selecting their high schools for the next school year. They are busy completing applications, taking entrance examinations, and requesting letters of recommendations from their principal, counselors and teachers.

The high school counselors are busy recruiting students for the  incoming freshman class. As a part of their recruiting efforts, they invite students to their Open House, Shadow Days and some schools give away free tickets to their sporting events.

In addition to the general guidelines set forth by the school, the counselors generally look for high achievers, students with good attendance patterns, good work ethics, and a strong desire to achieve.

Are you concerned about your child getting into the school of their choice?

Do you have questions about the high school selection process?

Here are some tips to help your child make a smooth transition into high school.

  • Decide on the schools that interest you.
  • Research the schools for their entrance requirements and course selections. The school’s website is a good place to start.
  • Request and complete applications for the schools of your choice. Applications may also be obtained from the school counselor, and by attending the High School Fair at the beginning of the school year.
  • Complete and submit applications along with all required documents to your school counselor for processing.
  • Adhere to all deadlines. No exceptions…..
  • Attend Open House activities to get an overview of the school’s programs and services . This is your opportunity to see if a particular school is a good fit for you.
  • Make a list of the questions you want answers to before your visit.
  • An entrance exam is required by many schools as a part of their selection criteria.
  • Prior to your test, utilize practice exams, and take advantage of programs in your school that may provide help in needed areas. Consult your counselor if you need help.
  • If an interview is required, it helps to take along your portfolio with awards, certificates, letters of recognition and any accolades you may have received that would help you stand out above the competition.

If you followed all of the guidelines above and met your deadlines in a timely manner, your work should be complete. Now focus on doing well in all of your current classes. Then you should be well on your way to a smooth transition into high school.

After reading this post I have to recommend a non-fiction book I just read by author Sarah Galimore called, “10 Things I Wish I Knew in High School” (www.eppinspires.com). This is a phenomenal handbook for teens and adults alike who have entered the world of high school together. I really
enjoyed reading this because it’s a short read but full of valuable
information. The author does a great job of capturing what teens “think” are important during high school and what actually is. She pushes for students to follow their dreams and become an advocate of their education and their future. High school always feels like the end all be all at the time but it is such a miniscule part in our existence. This book covers all the main IMPORTANT points such as: enjoy your youth, letting your own definition of success guide you in your career pursuits (don’t let others make that decision for you!), experience and exposure to the world is everything- go and explore!! Is your son or daughter a freshman in high school? Start checking this out NOW… I know it may seem like four years is a very long time but it flies by!
