Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15,1929 to the parents of Rev. Martin L. King Sr. and Alberta King.
He graduated from high school at age 15, and enrolled in Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He was ordained as minister at age 18, and earned his doctorate degree at Boston School of Theology in 1955.
He married Coretta Scott King on June 18,1953, and they became parents to four children: Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertine.
Dr. King dedicated his life to helping people. With a philosophy of non-violence, he fought for causes he believed would result in justice , equal rights and freedom for all people. It was his belief that, ” Non-violence resistance is the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom.”
Some highlights from his life and achievements include:
1956 – He led the Montgomery, Alabama boycott of segregated city buses.
1957 – The Southern Christian Leadership Conference SCLC was formed.
1963 – He led the March on Washington, from the Washington Momument to the Lincoln Memorial, and delivered the speech ” I Have A Dream”.
1964 – He was the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
1966 – He moved his family into an apartment in the inner city of Chicago, to show his committment to the fight for housing discrimination and unemployment.
1968 – He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
1968 – The King Center, a living memorial, was founded in his honor by his wife Coretta Scott King in Atlanta, Georgia.
August 22,2011 – The memorial, The Stone of Hope, was unveiled in Washington, DC.
